Realities of a 9-5

Updated: Dec 8, 2022

It's no secret that the traditional 9-5 lifestyle can be pretty draining. The daily commute, the monotony of the work itself, and the constant stress of meeting deadlines and dealing with office politics can all take their toll on our mental health.

But making a career change can be one of the best things you can do for your mental health.

Here's why:

1. It can help you find a job that's more fulfilling. If you're not happy with your current job, it's likely that your mental health is suffering as a result. Finding a job that's more fulfilling and meaningful can make a world of difference to your mental well-being.

2. It can reduce stress levels. If your current job is causing you a lot of stress, making a change can help to reduce those levels. It's important to find a balance between work and the rest of your life, and if your job is causing you too much stress, it's not worth it.

3. It can give you a fresh start. Sometimes we all need a fresh start in life, and changing careers can provide that. If you're feeling stuck in a rut, making a change can help you to feel more motivated and inspired.

4. It can help you meet new people. If you're feeling lonely or isolated at work, changing careers can help you to meet new people. Joining a new company or sector can give you the opportunity to build new relationships and expand your social circle.

5. It can give you a sense of achievement. Making a successful career change can be a great way to boost your self-esteem and confidence. Achieving something difficult is always satisfying, and it can remind you that you're capable of anything you set your mind to.

But I can't do that! It's too risky/I don't have the qualifications

A lot of people stay in jobs they hate because they're afraid to make a change. They think it's too risky or they don't have the qualifications for something else. But the truth is, a career change can be the best thing for your mental health. If you're unhappy in your current job, it can start to affect your mental health. You might feel stressed, anxious, or depressed. Making a change can help you feel better and improve your mental health. It can be scary to make a change, but it can also be very rewarding.

If you're thinking about making a change, here are a few things to keep in mind:

1. research your options: there are a lot of different careers out there, so take some time to research what else is out there. Talk to people in different fields and see what they like about their job. Get an idea of what you might want to do before you make any decisions.

2. don't be afraid to take risks: changing careers can be scary, but it's also an opportunity to try something new. Don't be afraid to take risks and step outside of your comfort zone.

3. consider your qualifications: you might not have the same qualifications as someone who's been in their field for years, but that doesn't mean you can't do the job.

In a nutshell

A career change can be the best thing for your mental health for a variety of reasons. It can help you to find a better work-life balance, give you a sense of purpose and direction, and provide you with a fresh challenge. It is exactly what happened to me. If you're feeling stuck or in a rut, a career change could be just what you need to boost your mental health and well-being.

In 2012, I decided to change career, and since then I have never ever looked back. I said goodbye to stress and depression. My relationship with my family improved, too.

This 2023, I am excited to share how I made my career shift.

I have walked the line of ambivalence. I want to hold your hand while I challenge you to think outside your comfort zone because that is where growth starts.
