How to start out homework for a 6 years old - My Method!

Updated: Jun 13, 2022

The homework routine has started for my little one. 6 years old. For me, it is always really important to give my children motivation and confidence. I don't want to have to spend hours doing homework and I don't want to fight against their smart brains, which is the case when they are not motivated.

So how I do to start out with a kid who thinks he is not good enough, or that it is too complicated, and who might have some attention difficulties?

1- I don t put any pressure. 2 - I have a little assistant (a 🐧 in this case) The 🐧 sits on a big happy 🙂 and I explain to the kid that the 🐧 will stay there as long as he stays concentrated on the homework. 3 - Then I start the working period.... Which is only one minute ( with a ⏲ ). 4- Usually the kid achieves to stay concentrated and it is a big win. The 🐧 is happy, the kid too and the mom too. 5- Usually the kid asks to do that again but for 2 minutes. I say "no" we have got to do a pause and he get frustrated because he cannot continue to work. So finally I accept to let him work longer, because I am a nice person 😅.

Benefit of this method :

  • Children feel more relax about homework

  • They get a quick win and gain more confidence

  • As a parent you can better find their concentration range (can they concentrate 5 minutes in a row? 10 minutes or more) that helps to adapt the break and develope there attention skills.
